Nao Yoshioka spent 2020 literally grounded in Tokyo. Finding that the pandemic had shattered her U.S. dreams, she spent her days watching the endless media coverage of a divided and chaotic world. Not only was she deprived of the opportunity to perform live on stage, but she also wasn’t even able to sing due to a damaged throat. Her days were filled with questions on the meaning of her existence and the fundamental reasons why she became a singer.
Amid the despair that many people faced, Nao wondered how many people could still believe that the world is a beautiful and wonderful place. The answer she found was that she, as an artist, should maintain a positive outlook on the future and pursue her ideals once again. It’s precisely because we as people are in a difficult situation that we need to sublimate into music.
Even the Tokyo Olympics, which was supposed to be a symbol of peace, caused division and reinforced to Nao that each of us has different values and different beliefs. She also came to believe during this time many people realized that they were being played by other people’s games after seeing the neglected discriminatory practices in a number of countries and the hidden social systems that exist in the world.
“The reality is always different from our ideals and painful moments do exist. In 2022 we live in a difficult world, and we need hope for the future, and I believe that we can choose the world we want to live in. There is no one enemy, people are friends who survive in this world. Each of us should be able to live our own life without being confused by the games that others have created. I truly believe that such a world is possible, and that is why I wrote this song. This song is a special song that expresses the wish I have for the world.”, says Nao.
Just as many artists in the past have created great music out of hardships, here is a new classic for the 2020s that Nao Yoshioka has prayed for through music.
